Have you been working hard to build a gym routine but feel like you’re not really getting anywhere? You’re not alone — and there’s usually a clear reason why. Here are the top three things that could be holding you back.
You might think you're being consistent — but are you really? The best way to find out is to track it over a three-month period. The odd missed session here and there is completely fine, but they can add up faster than you'd expect. Try using a calendar or spreadsheet to plan your workouts week by week. When you complete one, tick it off. When you miss one, mark it with a circle. Over time you'll see a clear pattern emerge. The key is to set realistic expectations for the number of sessions you can genuinely commit to each week, rather than planning too many and missing them. Plan wisely and plan for your actual life — not an idealised version of it.
Do you walk into the gym with a clear plan? One that you repeat for at least four weeks at a time, so you can practise the movements, build skill and get progressively stronger? Following a well-rounded programme is absolutely key to long-term progress. Going in and "winging it" will only take you so far before your results plateau. If you have some training knowledge, you can write your own plan — or better yet, work with a coach who can programme specifically for your goals and needs. A structured plan removes the guesswork and keeps you moving forward.
You might have nailed your consistency and you might have a solid plan in place — but if progress has still stalled, it could be because you're not applying progressive overload. This is one of the most fundamental principles in training: placing progressively more demand on the muscle over time. That doesn't always mean adding more weight. It could mean more reps, more sets, improved range of motion, or shorter rest periods. The key is that you are continually giving your muscles a new stimulus to adapt to. Without that, your body simply has no reason to change.
Consistency, a solid plan, and progressive overload — nail these three things and progress becomes almost inevitable.
Take an honest look at how you're currently training. Are you genuinely consistent? Are you following a structured plan and repeating it long enough to see results? And are you giving your muscles a reason to keep adapting? If any of these three things are missing, that's your starting point. If you'd like help putting together a plan, come in and speak to one of the Hello Fit coaches — we're always happy to help.
