Do you find yourself overeating in the evenings — sitting down after dinner and being unable to stop? You are not alone, and there are usually clear, practical reasons why it is happening.

There are several reasons why evening overeating happens — and several things you can try to help. Here are the most common causes and what to do about each one.

01

You're Not Eating Enough During the Day

The most common issue is simply not consuming enough calories across the day. Fasting for long stretches, skipping meals because you are busy, or deliberately restricting to "save calories" for later all backfire in the same way: your body knows it hasn't been given enough fuel and makes your brain think about little else once you sit down in the evening. The solution is to eat enough, spread across the day, starting with a proper breakfast.

02

You're Not Eating Enough Protein

Protein is the most satiating macronutrient. If your meals are low in protein, you are likely to feel unsatisfied even when you have eaten enough calories. Aim to include a quality protein source — chicken, fish, eggs, Greek yogurt, legumes — at every main meal.

03

You're Eating Out of Boredom or Stress

If you find yourself heading to the kitchen shortly after finishing a meal, it is worth asking what is actually driving that. Boredom, stress, habit and emotion are common triggers. Try having a glass of water first and waiting ten minutes. Going for a short walk, phoning someone, or having a structured evening routine can also break the pattern over time.

04

Your Environment Is Working Against You

If the foods you tend to binge on are easily visible and accessible in your home, you are making it harder for yourself than it needs to be. This is not about willpower — it is about environment design. Keep snack foods out of sight or out of the house entirely during periods when you are working on this habit.

Overeating in the evening is rarely about weakness. It is usually a signal that something earlier in the day needs adjusting.

The Bottom Line

Start with the basics: eat enough during the day, include protein at every meal, and take a look at your evening environment. If you have tried these things and are still struggling, speaking to a nutrition coach or GP can be a really helpful next step.
